The Gallerie dell’Accademia is housed in the complex of the Scuola della Carità, three very important religious buildings. It is currently made up of over 800 paintings. Since its creation, the collection has grown thanks to private donations and acquisitions. It had previously been part of the art academy of Venice, until it became independent from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia and it was decided to bring all the pre-nineteenth century Venetian art together. The Accademia opened to the public in 1817. The Gallerie dell'Accademia has the largest Venetian art collection in Venice and is one of the most important art galleries in the world.
